I only recognize "Sailor Jim" and "Alt.Callahans". And these days if I see the words "Sailor Jim" I see a man in a serafuku, which makes me want to blind my mind's eye.

Okay, now *that* made me laugh.
Violet Tigressviolet_tigress1 on December 23rd, 2010 02:38 am (UTC)
I remember Phillip & SSBB. Never been to alt.callahans.

I keep thinking of Earthworm Jim...

Actually, that's a pretty close match to the whole "boingy" thing ...

I am giggling in agreement.
Lyn Thorne-Alder: LynLynaldersprig on December 23rd, 2010 02:34 pm (UTC)
...I got "Callahans" and the analogy reference (to books)... and that's it O_o

alt.callahans was (is?) a Usenet newsgroup based on Spider Robinson's Callahan's Crosstime Saloon books. One of the denizens was Sailor Jim Johnston (who is now on LJ and has a blog), who carries about (creates?) his own personal weirdness field and is perfectly willing to write about it.

SSBB was (is?) a Usenet newsgroup, soc.subculture.bondage-bdsm. One of the denizens was Philip the Foole, who carries about (creates?) his own personal oddity field and is perfectly willing to write about it.

They are both possessors of minds not merely twisted but actively sprained.

I admire the heck out of both of them.

And I just yesterday (after some 15 years of following them both online) realized that they are probably both avatars of Coyote (or Loki, or Eris, or whatever your preferred Trickster deity).

Thanks for the explanation!

I know the books, love them.

Here's a thought:

Philip the Foole: Sailor Jim :: Clark Kent: Superman

(Or did you already know that?)

I'm thinking that no, you're not each others' alter egos. *grin*
