Book recommendation
After having been a fan of Jim Butcher's Dresden Files for some years, I finally picked started The Codex Alera. I've finished the first book, Furies of Calderon and am maybe a quarter of the way into the second, Academ's Fury. (Furies are essentially elementals -- earth, water, fire, air, metal, and wood -- that can be controlled by Alerans.)

It reminds me strongly of George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire sequence, albeit less depressing (in the words of 1776, "That man could deprrrrress a hyena!"). It is nothing like the Dresden Files except well written; the characters, setting, voice, pacing, etc. are all completely different.

You are correct -- Butcher has said at Q&A sessions that he really wanted to write high fantasy, couldn't get it to sell, and was able to go back to it after developing a strong fanbase with the Dresden Files.

I just wish David Weber could convince his publisher to let him write the rest of the books he has planned for Bahzell Bahnakson.
