Book recommendation
After having been a fan of Jim Butcher's Dresden Files for some years, I finally picked started The Codex Alera. I've finished the first book, Furies of Calderon and am maybe a quarter of the way into the second, Academ's Fury. (Furies are essentially elementals -- earth, water, fire, air, metal, and wood -- that can be controlled by Alerans.)

It reminds me strongly of George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire sequence, albeit less depressing (in the words of 1776, "That man could deprrrrress a hyena!"). It is nothing like the Dresden Files except well written; the characters, setting, voice, pacing, etc. are all completely different.

And....
The fact that Mr. Butcher set it in a fantasy Roman Empire setting doesn't hurt either, considering that (to my knowledge anyway) that type of setting hasn't been done before, or hasn't been done as much.
