Book recommendation
After having been a fan of Jim Butcher's Dresden Files for some years, I finally picked started The Codex Alera. I've finished the first book, Furies of Calderon and am maybe a quarter of the way into the second, Academ's Fury. (Furies are essentially elementals -- earth, water, fire, air, metal, and wood -- that can be controlled by Alerans.)

It reminds me strongly of George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire sequence, albeit less depressing (in the words of 1776, "That man could deprrrrress a hyena!"). It is nothing like the Dresden Files except well written; the characters, setting, voice, pacing, etc. are all completely different.

I enjoy the Dresden books, but I just could not get into the Codex ones.
I read and enjoy Fantasy, and I like Butcher's writing, but I got about a third into the first book and could go no further.
Dunno why.

Different tastes, I guess? I apologize if I caused offense.

Yes! Different tastes!
Shoot, No offense at all!
I work in a Library. I'm constantly amazed at the stuff people read.
