I've had better nights
Three, count them, three separate dreams where the protagonist was Travis McGee, all relating to trying to hide the clues to a will. In one he was in a bathroom, with his back up against one door and his feet braced against the other so no one could get in. In the second, the testator was contracting with McGee to make it difficult for the legatees to find the information, so they'd have to prove they were intelligent enough to solve the problem and inherit. In the third, he was sneaking through tunnels with hidden doors.

On top of that, somewhere during the night I woke up with a really painful ear, such that I wondered if I'd somehow developed a raging ear infection overnight. I must just have been sleeping on it wrong, though, because the pain is completely gone this morning and I'm not even sure which ear it was.

OMG, someone else who knows who Travis McGee is! I remember being a teen and asking my mom for something new and different to read -- I read everything I could get my hands on -- and she gave me the first of the McGee series. I plowed through every one of those books in record time... loved 'em!!!

My mental image of Travis McGee is Paul Newman as of about the 1990s. I don't know if he looked that way in my dream, though; I just knew it was him.

Ooooh, Travis McGee appearing in your dreams...

In the second, the testator was contracting with McGee to make it difficult for the legatees to find the information, so they'd have to prove they were intelligent enough to solve the problem and inherit.

Dorothy Sayers has a short story with that as plot, and Lord Peter Wimsey being called in to help solve it.

That's probably where I got it.

That must be the variant, because the Wimsey story was something else entirely. (Hoping that's sufficiently vague not to be a spoiler. :) )
