Also,
if my last name were Lutz, and if I had children, I would strongly consider avoiding names starting with the letter "K", given that so many email addresses are first-initial+last-name.

One of our professors here get mail with his middle initial. You usually can't see the period.

I once knew a new-born named Elizabeth Claire. I'm sure you can see where that one went.

There was someone decades ago (from Usenet) whose name was Meredith Emily Cummings. The email standard was the first six letters of the last name followed by the initials of the first and middle.

She had a hard time explaining why she wanted a new email account.

Oh, dear. Yes, I can see why that would be a problem.

In my first job we used the method "initial of last name" "initial of first name" "initial of middle name" (or "x"), then a count.

So my initials (sweh) became the user hsw1.

Now we had a Greek lady who had no middle name, her first name began with "e" and her last name "s". So... sex1. I had some trouble explaining to her why I really didn't want to give her that usename!

Indeed. May I ask what she ended up with as a username?

Apparently (or so she said) sometimes Greek women take their father's name as a "middle" identifier (in a "daughter of" kind of way) so we used that; sel1

I remember an Amanda Lynn from Usenet.

I had a schoolmate named Tom Watts who may have deserved it.

Oh, dear. That's unfortunate.

My biggest client has a coding system for its contractors: first letter of the contractor's first name, space, first two letters of contractor's last name.

This makes me "J HO."
